Author Check In/Out vs. Synchronize?

I'm working in a multi-developer environment and we're using check in/out to
control changes.

My question is:

If I check out the site and make updates then check the whole thing in, do the
changed files get uploaded? Similarly, when the next developer checks out the
site, will the changed files be downloaded? Or do we need to synchronize first
and then check in/out?

Thanks!

Generally you do not check out the entire site, but individual files in the
site. The check out process copies the file from the server to your machine
and locks it on the server. The check in does the reverse.

Can someone please advise whether check in/out compatibility between DW
versions works OK ? I use MX2004 (installed through Studio MX) and my
colleagues use MX upgraded from v4. When I check out a file, they can't see
I've got it checked out. Ditto in reverse. Why is this ?? Even when we
synchronise, the files do not appear as being checked out to the other person.
This is driving us MAD.

not needed day to day use.
When you checkout the file, what dreamweaver does first is to see if there
is a newer version of that file on the server. If there is, it Gets the new
version, then checks it out by putting a .LCK file on the server.
The .LCK file keeps other dreamweaver or contribute users from being able to
open the same file while you have it checked out.

What sync'ing can be used for, is to make sure you have an up to date copy
of the entire site for backup reasons. Say for instance there are people
using Contribute, they go along making updates for months onto the server,
then the server melts or gets erased....

If you haven't connected to the site and done a sync, you don't have the
latest versions of those documents in your Local Site folder. You can only
restore the site to whatever it was as of the last date you got all the
files.

Couple of handy things when working like this-
If you right-click on the main site folder, you can choose checkout for the
entire site. This can be useful if you have dreamweaver templates, and want
to get it all ready for a template change.

If you open the F8 Site Manager window- click the mouse in the local side
to give it focus, you can then use
dw menu-->Site-->Site Files View-->Select Checked out Items

That will scan your site for any file you have checked out, letting you
click the check-in button to return the files so others can work on them.
Should do this when you are done a work session- so other's don't get
frustrated because you've left some files checked out.

Thanks Paul!

So, does checking out a file just do a 'get' and overwrite the local file
without looking for differences (synchronize) and vice-versa?

Is it better to first synchronize the needed files and then check them out? Or
is this redundant?

Thanks!
