| Hi
My DMW MX under Mac OS 10.2.8 was running OK (not as fast as everything else,
but OK) until I did an Archive Install of a new system. Now, when I go back to
DMW from another app, I watch the spinning disk for about 30 seconds before I
can do anything. And if I switch views within DMW, from, say, "Site" to the
page I'm working on, I watch the spinning disk for about ten seconds. Also, if
I select a piece of text and then select another - even right next to the first
one - I watch the disk spin for about ten seconds before the new text is
selected.
It's driving me nuts. Anyone had this before? I repaired permissions and it
made no diffference.

| I am also experiencing a very dramatic slowdown of a freshly installed version
of Dreamweaver 2004 MX over Panther. It is actually too slow to use, incredibly
frustrating. Windows etc are so sluggish in redrawing, i have almost given up
with it as it is inpracticle in a working environment.
I have scoured various forums and we are not alone and i do believe Macromedia
are aware of performance issues.
Is there a udate soon because if not I am going to have to look at a
alternative, soemthing i do not want to do becaus e it has taken sometime to
get to reasonable skill level with Dreamweaver and i do like it as a programme.
How about a ETA for a performance fix eh?

| Macromedia never discusses release dates for products or for updaters. They
have, however, said it would be coming soon - very soon.

| The release of the update that will fix Dreamweaver's problems is called
Dreamweaver MX 2005. To upgrade to the new Studio, please pay ANOTHER $1000.
Macromedia has been saying it's coming "soon" since November.
Meanwhile, Macromedia exects and programmers are in Hawaii right now laughing
at all of us who paid $1000 for this garbage.
Macromedia would LOVE for us to think that they actually cared about us, the
customer. But if they did, we wouldn't be dealing with all these problems,
because Quality Assurance would have caught them. The only thing Macromedia
cares about is your wallet. I am tired of hearing about how the patch is coming
"soon." Macromedia owes me, and everyone else their money back for Dreamweaver
2004 MX. I personally switched to Adobe GoLive CS, and enjoy performance that
actually responds, and text that actually appears as I type.
Time to switch to GoLIve. Adobe optimizes for the Mac, Macromedia sits in
Hawaii laughing at you for spending money on them.
Sure, the patch is coming "soon." I think Jesus will come back for the rapture
a few years before this "patch" is ever released.

| I'm talking about MX, not MX2004.

|
| soetes 2004-03-11, 1:31 pm |
| Good thing that you asked! I've just noticed that, although I have 768MB RAM installed, the System is only seeing 256MB! Anyone seen this before? it's a 1.6MHz G5 running 10.2.8.
| |
|
|
| soetes 2004-03-11, 2:29 pm |
| Yeah. I'm searching Apple Support now but haven't found why the Mac isn't detecting the 512MB of installed RAM. It was once!
| |
| GroundZeroX 2004-03-11, 2:29 pm |
| On the G5, you have to install memory in pairs. The 512 extra thats in there,
did you install it yourself? If you did, did you put in 2x256 chips, or one
single 512?
If you just put in one 512, you will need to put in another 512 for both of
them to be used, or trade in your 512 for 2x256.

| GroundZeroX 2004-03-11, 2:31 pm |
| Considering the type of problems you are having, I would suggest taking it to
an Apple Specialist or to the Apple Store for it to get checked out. The
problem is more then likely a hardware problem, but it should be covered under
warranty. I used to work for an Apple Specialist, and I would say based off of
what you have said that your logic board is either acting up, or the memory
thats in there is now dead. If it's Apple memory, they might be able to switch
out the memory for you on site, if it's not, contact the manufactorer.
It is far more likely to be bad memory, if you have any problems, I can give
you my personal e-mail address, and refer someone to you.

| I have a G4 Quicksilver Dual Processor with about a 1.5Gb of Ram and have
performed the usual maintenance routines. And still the whole application is
sooooo sluggish, and that's just without any sites open. Once you open some
pages then it just crawls...
:( Very sad.

| Then why still here?
Nothing further for you here... move along...

| GroundZeroX 2004-03-11, 2:32 pm |
| No problem.
From my expierence it could be one of two things. It could either be the logic
board, or the memory. It could really go either way, but I would bet that it is
the memory though. If so much as one memory stick went dead, it would make the
system not recognize the corresponding stick. Thats why it's only showing 256.
If it was the logic board, this COULD be one of the symptoms, but, when the
logic board goes out, theres a lot of other weird issues that go along with it,
whether it be frequent crashes, drastic slow down of performance, refusal to
start up, or video glitches. I have seen a logic board do what you are talking
about once or twice, but it isn't something commonly seen though.

| Thanks for this. I'll take it in. I'm in Sydney, Australia, so thanks for the offer of putting me in touch with someone, but I'd best go back to the store where I bought it.
| |
| soetes 2004-03-11, 2:32 pm |
| Thanks, but I bought it installed and it definitely was showing the full 768MB before.

| SOLVED!
I simply took out and replaced the 2 x 256MB DIMMS and all is sweet and rosy.
Better still, I now see that MX2 2004 has the patch we've been waiting for, so
I'm off to upgrade.
Thanks to all, especially to Murray who made me look at "About this Mac". Doh!
Oh well, I know for next time.

| The contacts on RAM chips can corrode so that they no longer work. Taking a
chip out and putting it back in will score the corrosion enough to 're-make'
contact. It sounds like that might be what happened here....

| I would agree with you Murray, but the G5 is too new of a machine for the memory to start corroding like that though don't you think?
| |
| Murray *TMM* 2004-03-12, 10:32 am |
| It entirely depends on the environment. In a moist or humid environment (is
it in a sauna?) contacts can corrode sufficiently to break a connection
overnight.

| Glad that replacing your RAM solved your memory problem! I thought I'd point
out that the Dreamweaver 7.0.1 updater is available now as well, and this
should give you another really good speed increase on the
Macintosh--performance was a big focus of the work done for the updater.
