Author insert toolbar and command menu problems

[ I posted this on the General Announcements forum in error. It seems more
appropriate to post here now. ]

Problem 1 -
The names of the different categories on the "Insert" toolbar are wrong.
Example:

common - layout - forms - text - HTML - application -
flash elements - favorites - favorites icon - table border -
go back or forward - fill - P7 image - quarter - calendar makers -
(and so on)

The items on each seem OK (not sure). Mostly it seems that the name of the
tabs are wrong. Some things have their own tab with just that one tiem.

Problem 2 -
Also, when I select the "Command" menu, it does not drop down.
Instead I get a javasript error stating that it is unable to open a script
in a certain "shared" folder.

I use --
DW MX 2004
Windows XP Professional

Some of this started before I added some extensions. Then I added many more
(foolish me!) and that made it worse. It will be a big pain for me to
disable and re-enable them one by one to figure out which one caused the
problem.

Is there an alternative?

Steve:

They are wrong? What do you think they should be?

In my DMX2004, I see Common, Layout, Forms, Text, HTML, Application, Flash
elements, Favorites. That seems right to me.

> Some things have their own tab with just that one tiem

That's because you have installed an extension that put a singly populated
tab up there.

Most often, this error means that you have installed an extension that is
not DMX compatible. What extensions do you have installed?

One of the Insert toolbar tabs or categories is "Center Horizontal". On it
there is no Center Horizontal icon -- just 14 different frameset icons.

The "Go Back or Forward" tab has more than a dozen miscellaneous icons that,
I believe, used to be on a "Goodies" tab.

The "Favorites" tab has a Favorites Icon followed by what should be in the
"Head" tab -- base, description, keywords, link, meta and refresh.

Most of the extensions are from the book, Maximum Dreamweaver, 85 Add-Ons to
Supercharge your Development. Published 2004. Some are from the CD that
comes with the book. Others are directly from the Macromedia site.

Steve:

The tabs I listed are those that are standard with Dreamweaver. If you have
others there, it's because of extensions you have installed. As I said,
it's quite likely that you are installed an extension that is incompatible
with DMX, even though it was included on that CD (I wonder if they had
permission from the extension developers to do that?).

You now face the unpleasant option of a) reinstalling DMX, or of b)
troubleshooting your extensions by uninstalling half of them and seeing if
the problem persists with your COMMAND menu js error. If it does, then you
kow that the culprit is NOT in the half that you uninstalled. Continue with
your binary search until you identify the culprit or culprits and then leave
that one uninstalled.

If you have alot of extensions, the former method would be the better one,
since you will 'wipe the slate clean' so to speak.

Be very careful with wholesale extension installation like this - make sure
that a) the version that you are installing is the latest, and b) that it
is, in fact, compatible with DMX.

Thanks.

1 - Sounds like reinstalling Dreamweaver is the easier way to go. But will I
lose my site definitions?

2 - If an extension does add its own tab on the Insert toolbar, can the
icons for the items be moved to my own custom tab. A tab with only one item
on it defeats the purpose grouping multiple related items under one tab. I'd
want to then delete the extra tabs.

I see you can ADD items to a "Favorites" tab. Why couldn't you MOVE some to
another tab?

I believe you are right about some extensions creating their own tab for
just one item. However, it seems that the names on the tabs now don't match
the content of that tab. For example, I know the items -- base, links, meta,
refresh, keywords -- were not under a tab with the title, "Favorites Icon".
I would think that something got renamed and/or put in the wrong folder. Or
is there some editable XML file that controls the menus and toolbars? If I
have to reinstall, it seems I have little to lose trying that first.

Anyhow, thanks for the help.
Steve

Nope. But to be safe you can back them up using either DMX itself or one of
these -

Yes.

That's because you have hit the menus over the head with a 2x4 by loading
the incompatible extension(s).
