When applying the template, DW will ask you what current content goes where.
This can be a pain though.

In the past, I have cut and pasted the editable regions into a new page like
you mentioned.

Other times, I have gone through the code and added the necessary code to
make it work with a template. If you are lucky, you might be able to do all
pages at once with a find and replace (provided the code is exactly the same
on all pages).

Good luck, HTH.

This was the behavior I expected, but all it allowed me to do is specify where
the header and body go. As my editable areas are much finer than that, this
was useless.

Well, this seems to be what I will have to do. Still tedious, but at least I
can do all the pages that use the same template at once. Thanks for the
suggestion.

Which is why I always advise people to never apply templates to pages with
existing content.

I am using find and replace successfully after a couple of false starts. Here
are the steps for anyone else facing this darned situation:

1. I created the template from an existing page.
2. Then I applied the template to that page as everything, content and all,
matched.
3. Then I started the find and replace for all the other pages that need to
be using the template using the code from the page to which I just applied the
template.

The trick is to make sure you end your replacement statements with an
"InstanceBeginEditable" or you lock yourself out!

Otherwise, it is working beautifully. Cut and paste when it comes to over a
dozen pages just doesn't do it for me.

Thanks HTH.
