Site Window wont stay on testing server!
|

| This is EXCRUCIATINGLY AGRAVATING!
Does anyone know why or have a fix/work-around for the fact that nearly every
time I click away from the site window while working with the testing server,
when I go back to the site window the button that chooses whether the left side
of the window is connected to the Testing Server, Remote Server, or Site Map,
defaults back to the Remote Server (though it doesn't update the file list).
If I don't notice the subtle change in the window and try to PUT files to the
testing server, the next thing I know it's trying to log onto the Remote Server
and overwrite my live files. NOT GOOD! If I click back to the Testing Server,
it refreshes the file list and does what it's supposed to, but the minute I
click away to a file I'm working on and come back, it's defaulted back to the
Remote Server again. HELP
thanks in advance.

| Caspy:
Pardon me for asking, but are you building static HTML pages? Or do you
really need to use a testing site?

| Yes, I am developing dynamic pages (using PHP/MySQL, and CF/SQL2000).
Though I think I just realized a work-around! I think if I duplicate the site
and remove the live remote server from the options, the only server it will be
able to talk to is the testing server! This will of course be only usefull
when I'm "only developing" and not developing and putting up live content at
the same time... but it's the best I've got!
thanks for any help in advance!

| That shouldn't make a difference. Where is the testing server?

| Sure it will make a difference... my testing server is on my local network, my live server is at my hosting company's NOC.

| I don't think we are communicating.
A testing server will always intercept local previews. The files can only
get to the live server when you upload.
Hence, if you are having a problem with local preview, then deleting the
remote site from the site's definition will not make any difference.

| I think you're right... we are talking about two different things.
Let me start over:
I have a development computer with my local files on it, I have a testing
server on my local network that I need to have my local files PUT to when I
want to preview a page, I have a live server at my hosting company.
When I'm developing, If I choose to put a file up on the testing server and
preview how it works on the testing server (an Apache/mySQL server), most of
the time when I bring the site window back to the front and choose from the
"local files" the file I want to put up , the button that chooses whether I am
going to PUT the file on the testing server or on the live (remote) server
defaults back to my live server almost ever time I open the site window. Try
as I may to click the button and put up the files on the testing server (and
then preview the resulits), when I go back to code in the file some more, the
next time I open the site window, the button will have defaulted back to my
live server again. This means that when I choose the file I want to PUT on the
testing server and click the PUT button, rather than going to the testing
server (as I expect it to since that's the only place I'm putting things),
Dreamweaver tries to log onto my live server and put the file up there. Bad
Dreamweaver!
The part that's really annoying is that the site window doesn't refresh when
it decides it wants to PUT my file on the remote server, it actually shows the
directory structure of my testing server in the left part of the window even
though that's NOT where its going to try to PUT the file as soon as I click the
button.
I don't know if that makes things more clear, or more confusing... hopefully
the former.
thanks for trying to help with this... You're determined! :)

| I see. In this case, I would have two separate site definitions. One for
the testing mode (local=local; test=test; remote=blank), and the other for
the production mode (local=local; test=blank; remote=production). Then just
connect to whichever site you need.
