Author importing word files
Rayne

2004-01-09, 11:29 am

I'm using DWMX2004, W2K, Microsoft Word 2000 and am trying to import word
files and preserve the formatting of the document. (bold, italic,
paragraphs) I thought I could copy and paste the text into DWMX, but the
formatting is lost. Also, File>Import>Word Document is greyed out in both
code and design view. Is there something I need to install to allow me to
import word documents?
TIA,

Try copy and paste.

How large is the Word file?

Thanks for the reply, but I said I tried copy and paste and the formatting
was lost. It was just a paragraph. Also, the import word document command is
greyed out in all views. My questions are:
1. Does DWMX keep the formatting of pasted text (bold, italic, color, etc)
from word or is the documentation incorrect? If so, is there anything
special I have to do besides making sure I get the last paragraph mark?
2. How do I make the import word document command available.
Thanks for the help.

Rayne:

When I copy and paste from Word or Excel into DMX2004 most (all?) of the
formatting is retained, and the code produced actually is quite acceptible.
I have to do nothing special to get this.

I know that there is a size limitation of the source file, however, and
that's why I asked that question - how big is it? I think it will not work
on anything > 150K, but I could be wrong....

OK, thanks. Copy and paste doesn't retain the formatting for me even if I
just paste one sentence. But, even more perplexing is that the import word
document is greyed out. Any ideas why?

Anyhow - I have no clue why it's not enabled for you. But it seems to me
that there was another post here in the last several weeks about the same
thing and the solution was to reinstall....

The word document is 29k, just under 2 pages. I'm sorry I didn't say that
sooner. I didn't undrstand why the size of the document would affect whether
the command is greyed out or not. The pasted text was one sentence, 10
words.

Fixed it by upgrading to Office XP 2003. Now, the import word document

To explain even further... The document I was trying to import was a word

DWMX2004 needs Office 2000 or higher installed to work.

I have Office 2000 installed and the File>Import>Word Document menu selection
is greyed out for me as well. I don't think it depends on what version of
office you have installed, OR I am missing a file that dreamweaver requires to
import word files. Anyone know what this file is??

Dreamweaver MX 2004 7.01

I'm going to reinstall and see if this fixes the problem, I doubt it....

It doesn't have anything to do with version of Word, the OS, or DW it is part
of the set-up. Why are you working with word and importing the document? That
seem like you want to do the same job twice.

If you want to inport a word doc here is what you do.

Open a new html page then select File>Import>Word Document You first have to
have a file open to import or you will never be able to.

I work with a number of other people and one of the many jobs that I do is web
design. Not all of those people own a copy of Dreamweaver and not all of them
know HTML **OR** if they do they find it easier to open Word up and start
typing than have to code what they want to say in HTML. I'm probably going to
put it all into a mysql database anyways and use PHP to display it. You are
getting off the point of Dreamweaver not doing something that it should be able
to and from what it sounds like something that works fine for other people.

Maybe it is a option that you have to select when you install. I think I did
the standard install. Is it some Exchange module that I have to download??

No - on the PC it's a native capability.
