Author Frame type of question

I have a layout that I want to use and stay static through-out a site. And
want another url to appear in a designated center area on the page when a
link on the layout is clicked. Kinda like when you use frames, but I don't
want to use frames. Its also like using a server-side include but with a url
as opposed to a html file.

Hope this doesn't sound to confusing. Let me know if I can explain better.

Thanks Steve

Yes, you can explain better.

a) Can your rule in or out using <iframe>

b) will these url's you want to load located within your site, or are they
external pages?

c) if they are within your site- are they already created?

Ponder this: Is it possible by use of PHP include to open another website
within the include area?

and answer me this: Can you have a html document immediately redirect to
another url and if so how?

The url's are located on one of my servers but external from the website.
These url's I want to load are search queries in a database that I have set
to query by the use of a url.

Simply put but not done, I would like the results of a hyperlink to appear
within the same document... Without frames. Only with out frames because I
cant get frames to sit where I need them to in the document, and I would
rather not use them to begin with.

I could accomplish what I need to by using mysql & PHP but don't have the
time to move 500+ products over to MySQL...

with them being in different site folders- it may not be possible to
include them as SSI. Most hosting will not allow calling SSI from outside of
that one site's folder. But that would be one option, IF you have control
of them, and IF they are not complete html documents, but only the snip of
code needed to display as an Include within the main complete document

So why not use frames? I mean, I know that frames are horrible from a
usability standpoint, but any of the other "solutions" that change part of a
page suffer from the same usability issues, plus some added browser/platform
compatibility issues. The choices are frames, ifrimes, show/hide layers, set
text of layers. If you're going to dump those usability issues on tha user,
you might as well go ahead and use frames for the best browser support.

As long as you give your frames useful names, there are no usability isues.

If you want to print your frames as intended and bookmark your pages
these two solutions work good: (doesn't work on iFrames)

www.searchmechanics.com/learn/srf/srf.htm
or asp
http://www.dmxzone.com/ShowDetail.asp?NewsId=732

Frames are the best solution when:

- you want to keep some information always visible like the main
navigation or the company logo

- you want to have a scrollable area for text

- you want to show info from other pages inside your site
