Author [DW MX 2004] crashing before opening

I am sorry, Murray, and others, but I am really upset. I have been using DW
MX 2004 almost since its release. I had some problems (with the cache)
that disappeared, I upgraded my RAM to 1 gigantic gig, and now: I had
closed down DW, thinking I was done for the day, but I wanted to check
something: no go. No DW, no nothing. Just a flickering of the screen when
it looked like DW was starting up as per normal. It was not. It is not.

Please: do not throw this out as 'just a complaint'. I have been
very, very patient and easy with/on MM, but my patience is running out, I
am tired, feel let down.

I have not installed any extension, programme or whatsoever between
exiting DW two hours ago and trying to start up now.

I know Murray has a standard list of questions. I realize they should be
answered in order to solve the problems, but: A) telltale, huh, that I
won't have to look further down than a couple of messages in this group to
find Murray's list? B) why don't we hear from MM? They took my money
readily enough! Not my bosses' money, not I don't know who's: they took my
hard earned money - and I am sitting here nearly in tears.

OK, here's for the questionnaire:

1. What is your OS? - Win XP Pro

2. What is your AntiVirus? - AVG

3. Is your AntiVirus doing realtime protection? - No.

4. What is your Firewall? - none other than the hardware one in my
router

5. What other background programs are running? - The Bat email client,
Mozilla.

6. What Dreamweaver extensions do you have installed? - Quite a few. I
won't list them now, if you don't mind, for I have had them installed
since Adam's day, long before this occurred.

7. Are you *running* DMX from a networkshared drive? - No, I am not and
never have been. ;-) (having trouble typing the emoticon - you really have
no idea how let down I feel!)

8. Where are your 'local' files? Are they on a network shared drive?
-No.

9. Have you ever been able to run DMX or is this a recent failure? - See
initial message. Yes I have been able to run DW MX 2004; this occurs out
of the blue.

10. Does this only seem to happen with certain files/sites?- No. I wasn't
even in the 'file stage' - just trying to open/start up DW.

11. Does recreating the site cache (SITE | Recreate Site Cache) help? -
No.

12. Are you using *any* OS-improving utilities like "TweakUI" for
example? - No, I learnt a while back I shouldn't.

Now please, give me back my Dreamweaver!

Adriana:

I have never dismissed yours or other's problems as just a complaint, and I
am genuinly sorry that you are having this interruption in your work.

Given your answers below, I would recommend that you contact Macromedia
directly and take advantage of the two free one-on-one support calls
included with your purchase.

You have restarted your system, right?

Sorry, Murray, I did not mean to say that. I know you do your utmost, but
this is so frustrating, especially since I was so happy with the programme.
It was perhaps unfair to single you out, but then, you do have sort of a
high profile in this group ;-)

Have you ever tried to do that from Europe?
I have contacted their European support desk by email before, but that was
an utterly frustrating experience: I only got standard replies. No use
trying to ring them now: we are well into weekend mode here.

> You have restarted your system, right?

Yes, I even tried to start up from safe mode.

However, there is one thing that I would like to mention, for it can be a
possible cause:

When trying to delete the content of the site cache directory (c:\documents
and settings\application data \user\ macromedia\dreamweaver mx
2004\configuration\site cache| ) I found one empty folder of a long since
deleted site, that refuses to be deleted.

I have tried (as best I can) through the dos prompt (I am using Win XP
Pro), and the command rmdir/s . I am no expert at this, but followed
instructions to the letter.

Thanks for replying, Murray, it does make me feel slightly better knowing
someone is listening.

Why were you deleting that file?

Why not just rename the parent folder?

Sorry, Murray, I may have used the wrong terminology.
It is the (empty) folder that I cannot delete.
I have just put a file into the folder, hoping that would help, but it just
says: access denied. Cannot rename the folder or move it either.

Am just now in the process of reading up Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
- 298345.

Thanks for bearing with me.

Perhaps I should have explained: I am the only user and administrator on
the machine (should that not be one of your standard questions, Murray?)

Thank goodness, I am back in: DW is up and running again (I am not, I am
sitting here all shaken).

Trying to reconstruct:
- started up in Safe Mode: D_ MX 2004 did not want to start up
- deleted content site cache (apart from the one empty folder that will not
bydge)
- tried to start up DW again: No luck.

- repeated the process several times, last time nop in safe, but ordinary
mode: bingo! DW started up again, I can access my files and folders.

Cannot see any logic as to why it ould suddenly decide to play ball.

For now I am relieved, and a bit happy, but it is enormously frustrating
that DW is so wobbly, that I cannot *trust* it to be stable. Does not make
for a relaxed diy at my desk!

Thanks for all ykur efforts, Murray. I do so hope the update will be out
soon.

Shabat shalom.

It is possible in windows to "tag" a file with an attribute.
These are not normally visible when you look at the file either
as an icon or in a terminal window.

Among the things one can control with attributes is visibility
(one can make a file or a folder invisible). Another is that
one can make the file unremovable. Sadly, I've forgotten
which attribute that is (I normally only use Windows to run
Dreamweaver and Photoshop.)

But when you have a terminal window open in Windows there is a
command available called "attrib" (without the quotes). Go
to the folder containing the folder that cannot be removed
and type "attrib" at the command prompt (without the quotes
of course). You will get a list of the files and folder names
with some letters in front of them. Those will be letters
like A for "archive", and a bunch of others. i'll bet your
folder shows up with some letter that none of the other items
have. If so, that's it.

The attrib command can change that letter and make the folder
removable.

I'm really sorry that I can't be more definite but it is
very late here (and well past my bedtime) and I don't have
a Windows machine here.

But if you post your results, I'll be able tomorrow to give
you definite instructions on how to work the attrib command.

Sorry I can't give better advice.

---- Paul J. Gans

PS: The reason for these particular attributes is to make
the operating system files, the crucial ones, both invisible
and unremovable. That way one can't "accidently" remove
them and make the system unusable.
