Hello, Mac OSx 10.2.8
First timer w/ DMX04 and attempting to upload a small test site. I have been
chatting w/ the hosting co. and all the settings appear to be correct but...
Can't upload.
Alan Ames helped me last night, (thanks) but is probably taking a well
deserved break tonight.
In Site Manager I am able to Test Connection= A-OK.
Now when I tap the "put" button all hell breaks loose.Windows like cannot
connect, server not responding, waiting for server, DW cannot understand the
remote server time?? The hosting co. is kinda puzzled and asked me some HiTech
stuff (I am very new at this). Are there any issues w/ firewall? DW should
work even w/o server time? If the Java-based file manager isn't working then
possibly a snag w/ my installation of java? And Is there a way to get around
that?
If someone could walk me thru this it would be nice.

Is there another FTP program that might work? And are they expensive?
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

You test the connection and it works. This means that your FTP host field
is correct and that an FTP server is alive at that location.

You cannot connect or determine server time. This means that either a) your
host directory is incorrect so that you are trying to connect to the wrong
folder in your hosting account, or b) that your permissions are not allowing
you to create folders on the server. That's how DW determines the server
time - by creating and then deleting a folder.

Please tell me the contents of each field in your Remote Site definition
panel.

I made the changes
I then hit the "put" button and...

FTP error;cannot open remote folder docs/
Access denied- the file may not exist or there could be a permissions problem

Try removing that from the host folder field.

I deleted > docs from the folder at hosting co.( now it's blank)
Same thing.

Maybe there is something else that is marked wrong like should I enable check
in and check out?? just guessing now.
Can you think of anything else I might be doing to foul things up?

I never ever thought it would be like this
and there is no sand around here that I can stick my head in either.
I am all eyes and ears.

As asked in previous thread when you were trying to get connected -

If you leave the "Host Directory" line blank, what do you see for folders in
the Remote side of the F8 Site Manager?

list the folders please.

* If you see nothing there for folders, try this-
Put a / in the "Host Directory" line. Just a single /
Connect. What do you see now?

list the folder names please.

Have you enabled passive FTP?

In the F8 panel in remote view= " to see your remote files click the button in
tool bar" ( just above that) I click it then
Server not responding then ( blue status bar very slowly) then FTP error,
cannot get remote folder info...
also the SFTP is Not checked.
Is it possible that a problem exists at the hosting level, is there something
I can ask them to change or look at?

Have you tried checking the "enable Passive ftp" in the remote info pane?

By remote info pane do you mean in the files palette up top? It is blank.

Also, in Site Defintion: there is an option for working directly on FTP or
RDS, anything there?

In Site Def. the summary section Testing Server:" I'll Set this up Later" is
there

And: is there anything in the Advanced Tab That could be causing the sanag?

I went ahead and in the advanced tab checked the Passive FTP.
Things started to happen and it looks like something uploaded, Is there something I need to do next?
Is there a delay?

A delay? Do you see files in the remote site now?

Do you see folders listed in the Remote side of the Site manager now?
If yes---
What Are The Folder Names, please.

If no folders- Are there any error messages?
If yes, what exactly are they?

on your other questions--

> Also, in Site Defintion: there is an option for working directly on FTP or
>RDS, anything there?

Leave that at FTP, don't mess with the other connection types.

> In Site Def. the summary section Testing Server:" I'll Set this up Later" is
>there

Again- in the Testing Server section, leave that set to NONE.
If you are using the "wizard" or basic site definition dialog box, i think
you have to say NONE to the question about What type of server model are you
using?" where it gives you choices of PHP or asp or none.

> And: is there anything in the Advanced Tab That could be causing the sanag?

The Advanced tab at the top of the site definition window has no extra boxes
or settings- But it does show them in a logical way, that is easier to use
if you understand what needs to be entered.
I prefer using the Advanced instead of the basic "wizard" boxes that go step
by step and has the "next" buttons.

For some reason the palette where Assest and files was is now just Assets, and
when I F8 files is full screen?
What is going on??? I would be able to answer the question about what folders
are there if I could get back to original desktop.

The larger Site Manager window from pressing F8 has room to show BOTH the
local and remote file lists. Look at it, and read the info in it- the
labels and headers.

Then open the F1 help files for info on what is where in the Site Manager
and other windows.

The Twilight Zone: I went back to check all the settings again and they were
blank! Yep! I came in from the full screen files window and nothing was there
in the advanced section but yes in Basic.
I went in thru the Advanced Tab and redid all the settings and Bingo.

The Eagle has landed!!
The hosting co. said it could be a browser cache problem, to refresh often if
using a Mac.

Thank you for your patience and help.
Very happy now.
alex
