Author Deleting Site Definition

Here's what's going on.

I was trying to connect DW4 to a set of files that had been upgraded and
forgot to delete all of those _mm and _baks folders before doing so - and
now I'm getting an error and cannot get DW4 to even open.

Is there a file that I could modify which "Site" DW4 opens up with so I can
point it to another site that is a valid working site and won't give me this
error?

I sure would appreciate some help.

Thanks, Susan

I'm not trying to connect any more to the folders of this site through
contribute. I want to delete all of the files in this directory.
I'm doing this through Windows Explorer- however, DW4 when it starts, wants
to point to this "Site2" I created.

I want this Site definition to point to another Site (Site1) in my list of
sites that actually works, so I don't get this error upon start because it's
trying to open up (Site2).

Those files are from Contribute.

since your Dreamweaver 4 is crashing, i'm going to guess it's Contribute 2?

bad luck. You may want to consider upgrading dw.

Older message info is below.

before connecting to the site- open up a different FTP client and go to
remote site.
Delete just the .mno notes files and leave the .LCK files in
place.

In your Local Site Folder (in windows explorer or mac finder, Not within
dreamweaver) find and delete all the design note .mno files in that site
that you managed to download before crashing.

more info in the Contribute forum (older threads now), in short- Contribute
2 and Dreamweaver 2004 write the filename.mno files with some invisible
characters at the
start of the .mno files.

Using Contribute 2 or MX 2004 on the same sites with UltraDev or Dw4 users
and having Design Notes uploaded will cause the older versions to crash when
they try to read the newer .mno files.

In other words- it will be an ongoing thing- Every time the Contribute
user edits a file, it will create a new filename_they_edited.mno file.
And that file WILL lock up your Dw4, unless you delete the file off the
server BEFORE connecting with dw.

So then just follow your own advice and point Site2 to the Site1 folder. Edit

whatever).

But-- what the problem is, is that the site is the last used one.
When dw opens, it opens that site.
That site has "poison" .mno files that crash dw4.
So can't get to the site definition dialog boxes.

so, should rename the local site folder in windows explorer, can then get Dw
to launch.

Probably the easiest thing thing to do is to rename the old "local site
folder" to something else for now.

then when Dw4 opens, it will still try to open that last used site, but
since you renamed the site folder, it give an error message: The local site
folder does not exist.

then you can go about whatever you want to do.

You should delete those .mno files off your computer, if you are going to
keep using dw4.

And- repeating myself but want it clearly understood-
If you connect to that same remote site and it has Contribute 2 .mno files
on it, you will lock up dw4 again.

Ah ha! Gotcha...didn't consider the differences w/ DW 4. I haven't used an
older version in a while and forget these things sometimes! Thanks for the
correction :)

Alan,

Will give that a try - I had a work around a couple of months ago and can't
remember what I did.

I've got 5 servers I"m dealing with - and different versions of DW - UGHHHH!
I'm trying to get the current site(s) copied to new servers and then
upgrade, but someone else opened it up in DW04 too soon. . . . .

Thanks - Susan

similar problem (but with different cause) is possible with newer versions-
They are all set to always launch with the last used site. If the site
cache file is corrupted for example and causes dreamweaver to wink out, you
get stuck because you just can't get the app to finish launching.

Alan,

That's where i am now. I've tried renaming it - but right after it indexes
the site and you think DW is going to open, it crashes.

I'm now uninstalling DW4 and will re-install into a new directory and try it
again tomorrow. I'm fried.

are you sure you're renaming the correct "local site folder" ?

if you rename it, dw should open, and immediately ERROR msg that the local
site folder does NOT EXIST. Then you can click okay and move on.

If you then point this site def back at that same blasted site folder, then
Nothing has been fixed. Dw4 will bomb out as soon as it whiffs a new style
..mno file.
