Need Variable off logon information

I have a database with logon, password and ID that is used to validate
users. Once they logon I want to set a session variable that is their ID
from the database, that way when they view records they only see the ones
with their session ID. Can someone tell me how to do this or point me to a
tutorial. Thanks
