Dreamweaver 2004 MX Crashing After Updates
|

| Yesterday I installed some Windows Updates on my Win XP system, specifically:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873376) Security Update for Windows XP
(KB841533) Security Update for Windows XP (KB841356) Security Update for
Windows XP (KB840987) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6
Service Pack 1 (KB834707) Security Update for Windows XP (KB833987) Update for
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (KB883357) Critical Update for
Windows (KB833407) Since then, Dreamweaver MX 2004 (7.0.1) has been having
problems. It starts fine, however if I try to change sites, it crashes. If I
try to recreate site cache, it crashes. If I try to delete a file or folder,
it crashes. However, I can open, edit, and upload files in the site it starts
in when it opens. Since I can't change sites, though, it a real problem since
I have about 15. Any ideas of what could be wrong? I tried restarting my
system, but that didn't help. I can only guess one of those updates did
something DW didn't like. System: Processor: Pentium 4 1.8 GHz
Memory: 768 MB PC2100 266 MhZ OS: Windows XP Pro (I do NOT have SP2
installed)

| Unistall DW and reinstall. Make sure you backup your site settings first.

| Is reinstalling the only fix? I was hoping it was something easier like
uninstalling one of the updates. If I have to reinstall, how can I back up my
site settings when it crashes when I try to manage my sites?

| I was able to back up my site settings, though it crashed again as soon as I
was done. How can I back up my keyboard shortcuts though? I literally spent
an hour or more customizing them and I really don't want to have to print them
out and then go through resetting them all again if I have to reinstall DW.

| I have a similar experience. I have all the updates to Windows XP as well. My
issue is that I may have to launch Dreamweaver 3 or 4 times before I can open,
then it is very slow. Before the updates all was fine. I feel that it is in the
security fixes but do not data to back that assumption. Please help

| Found an extension to DW to backup the keyboard shortcuts at
http://www.communitymx.com/content/...e.cfm?cid=7EF02 I start trying to
remove some of the Windows updates, but each removal requires a restart so I'll
probably go ahead and do the DW reinstall (though I think it really sucks that
there isn't a patch or some other method for fixing this other than a full
reinstallation)

remember your configuration folder is on this path:
C:/Document and Settings/(user)/Application Data/Macromedia/Dreamweaver MX
2004/Configuration/
replace user with your user level.

Is therea an error message?
Did you install SP2?
Did can you do a clean install then just copy-paste the backed up files
(on stages).
This can be very primitive debuging but might be all you need.

no specific error, just the XP box saying program had crashed and asking if I
wanted to send the error report (which I did each time). I did not install
SP2. I did another Windows Update, then reinstalled DW from the CD over the
old installation. It fixed the errors and, fortunately, I didn't have to sit
and restore all 22 of my sites, just their caches. I did have to use that
extension to restore keyboard shortcuts, after reinstalling the extension.
Only annoyance is that I did lose all of my snippets (forgot to back them up,
so my own fault).
