Author OT: Multiple sites revisited
Murray *TMM*

Folks:

My client has a highly ranked and desparately needy site here -

http://www.countrywaysoak.co.uk

I have built a new site for him here -

http://www.oakfurnituremaker.co.uk

I'd like to transition people away from the former onto the latter, other
than by the New Site link buried amidst the noise on that entry page.
However, I do not want to lose the benefit of the page rankings in the SE's.

The two domains are hosted on separate user accounts (but with the same
host).

What would be the best overall strategy to adopt here?

(you may recall a previous thread about this that really came to no
conclusion)

Point the primary domains to the servers DNS. Add the other domain as a
"parked" or "add-on" domain.
However, the nice rank for the first domain might stay for a while, but
the rank for the new domain will eventually raise and they'll meet at
the same spot eventually, providing the incoming links are the same.

I'd bite the bullet and live through the initial phase since people
accessing the site through the "wrong" URL will get one name in the URL
window and another in the site's text, images, etc. That doesn't build
confidence.

Dan:

You are suggesting that I make the countrywaysoak domain an alias to the
oakfurnituremaker domain? Right now they are two separate sites on two
different hosting accounts.

And I'm not completely clear on this - you mean just leave it as it is and
bite the bullet of that?

Oh, I took it the new site and domain would replace the old. Sorry.

That suggestion was based on the assumption above.

Now when understanding the situation better, I don't think there are any
ways to surf on the good page rank other than to put links on the old to
the new, on each page. Any other trick might come back in your faces.

Yeah - was afraid of that.

I was hoping that Micha or Gary or Joe or darrel would come up with some
wizardry. WHERE ARE YOU GUYS WHEN I NEED YOU? 8)

Okay. I'm here. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about IIS to offer a
good solution. If it were on Apache, I'd just say to use .htaccess to
redirect with a 301 (moved permanently) code. My first thought was to do
it with an ASP Response.redirect, but the pages appear to be plain HTML.
Presumably there is a way to have IIS parse .html files as ASP, but I'm
not sure, nor can I offer a suggestion of how to go about it.

If you can get the host to make that configuration change, you could set
up a re-direct to forward requests for pages on the old site to the
nearest match on the new site.

Like I said, I'm kind of out of my element on an IIS server, but I'd
think you need to talk to the host.

Unfortunately, the host communicates via remotely relevant technote
speak....

Do they have a FAQ or technote section that you can search for the term
redirect? If you prefer, you can send a link off list and I'll take a
look.

Their FAQ/technotes are pretty thin. I poked around on the MSDN site and
the only thing I found that hinted that it might be possible to
manipulate the file name extensions processed by ASP is this one that
deals with processing .net files with the .asp extension:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;815172

This might get a more knowledgeable response in the appdev group.
