Author Removing background from jpeg illustration

I recently purchased a small illustration (jpeg format) from a stock photo site to use in an Illustrator design. The illustration came on a white background and I wanted to separate this background from the illustration before I put this into my design. I
t appears to be all on 1 layer.

How can I separate this background from the illustration? Can I do it in Illustrator, or do I have to separate in another program 1st?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't think you can do this in Illustrator. Your best bet is probably going to be Photoshop, and even then it can be challenging for complex illustrations. Lots of good tutorials on masking out backgrounds on the web.

Illustrator options:
* Draw a clipping path with the pen tool.
* Live-trace (need CS2 or greater).
* Redraw entire illustration with pen tool.

Photoshop Options:
* Draw a Clipping Path and save as EPS, PDF, pr PSD.
* Double-click on "Background" in the Layers palette, then erase the white background. Magic Wand tool might be useful. Save as TIF, PDF, or PSD.

Hi there,

Open the transparency tab, select your image, change Normal option in Transparency tab to Multiply. That should make the background transparent.
