newbie- how do I make a grid I can print?

hello,

I'd like to print a grid out on 36x36 paper using illustrator. I have
the classroom book but I cant find anything that seems relevant when I
look under pattern (is there a different word I should look for?).
Can someone give me the steps to get me started?
