I create Illustrator 88 file in Matlab and want to edit them in
Illustrator. Unfortunately I get the error message " Cannot open Illustrator file" . Matlab tells me the files are Illustrator 88 files.
Is there any way I can open them with AI CS2 ?

Did that. I said "Illustrator can't complete this operation because of an unknown error.

Would you care to post a sample file? (Put it in a .zip archive to prevent corruption.)

Do you have Adobe Acrobat (not Reader, but the full application), and, if so, can you 'print' to Adobe PDF?

Ooo... look at this:

(Requires Perl, though.)

The statement on that page that "Illustrator 10 no longer supports the Illustrator 88 file format" is false. I have dozens of Illustrator 88 files that Illustrator 10, CS and CS2 import perfectly fine. (I even have a working version of Illustrator 88 that
still runs under Classic on a PPC Mac, and I can save files from it and reopen them in Illustrator CS2.)

What is true is that Illustrator 10 and later will not export files in Illustrator 88 or Illustrator 2.0 format.

If Illustrator 10 and later are not importing files created by Matlab in what it calls Illustrator 88 format, it must be that those files were not completely valid in the first place, but that earlier parsers were more forgiving of the errors.

I thought that might be the case. I do recall opening v88 files in 10.
