All of a sudden, when I try to place a .pdf in a new document in illustrator cs2, windows xp, i get a list of fonts that are missing (as if i were trying to actually open the document). all the fonts are embedded and subsetted.

I don't know if I am right or not but I think it depends on how the PDF file was created. Like if it's a scanned (no text) image of a document or a PDF that was created like a word processor (has actual fonts).

Embedded fonts in a PDF document are useful for viewing only. Since AI opens PDFs with the expectation that you will be editing the document, it ignores embedded fonts and will offer to substitute if you do not have those fonts installed on your system.

When you place these PDFs in the "Link" checkbox checked?

Otherwise it is like embedding, and the all the vector elements become live as do the fonts

To John Slate: THANK YOU!

I don't know how the "link" box became UNchecked, as I have been using it with success for several months. I must have cleared my preference file at some point. Anyway, i am an untrained user trying to use the program professionally, so I run into simple
little problems like this that I can't solve all the time. Thanks again, you saved me a lot of problems.
