| Can anyone tell me if there is a way to get the Pen Tool in Illustrator CS to display a preview line before placing a point, similar to the way Freehand MX does? A plugin perhaps, or some setting I am unfamiliar with?

| I don't think so. However after you place the point, you can edit/move it by holding the space bar and that way get sort of a live preview.
So make your point and without releasing the mouse button press the space bar and move the line around. That help any?

| This also works after pulling out a control handle. Click (place point) and drag (pull handle) then, without releasing the button, hold Space and you can reposition the point as drawn. This also works when changing the control handle of an existing point.
It goes a little haywire if you are closing your path, that is extending an existing path with the pen tool and clicking on the start point.
