Adobe Illustrator for Windows - Showing raster images

OK, I don't use Illustrator much. But, I opened a PDF and just need to
swap out a graphic. For some reason when I open Illustrator all I see
are vector images, any raster image is not appearing. I even try to
place an image and still don't see anything, it shows and outline if I
click on where that image should be, but for some reason can't see the
image.

This seems so simple, but I cannot find out what is going on. Is there
a preview mode or something that I may have triggered.

Have you tried hitting control-Y yet to switch from wireframe mode to
preview mode?
