Merging outlined stroke with drop shadow

| Hi I am trying to merge some lettering in Illustrator 10 so that the
expanded stroke and drop shadow can be merged into one shape with one
outline leaving the inside of the lettering empty. I'm not sure how to
accomplish thia. can anyone help?

| Assuming I understand what you are asking....If I wanted this outcome,
I would take a screen shot (or convert it into a gif) and then paste it
into a new AI screen and use the live trace (in color). It's sort of
jury-rigging, but it would work.
