Here's the deal. I select an object, then I shift select another
(larger) object... Then, in the Align palette I click on Distribute
Object button, say, Vertical Distribute Center... and NOTHING happens.
Then I tray clicking all the other Distribute buttons, and one of them
works, say, Vertical Distribute Right (i.e. the first selected object
moves right to align with the other object). But then NO OTHER
DISTRIBUTE button works.

I am either stupid or dumb I suppose. (Distribute spacing is set to
Auto.) But should not the distribute object functions just work?

Say I have two objects selected, shouldn't Distribute Right cause one
object to move right? And then shouldn't Distribute Left then cause
that object to move left? And if I keep clicking shouldn't the object
move right - left - right - left etc.

AI does not work that way -- sometimes it works as expected, sometimes
it does not. Or is it just me?

i agree. although i don't think it is a problem aith AI. i've had
trouble with the ditribute function, but sometimes I can get it to
work. it must be a very precise tool that takes a tibetan monk's
understanding.

I read this on another forum a while back.

With both objects selected you then click on the one that you don't
want to move (don't hold shift down just click an object) - this is now
the key object, (Cancel Key Object can be selected in the align fly away
as a result). Now pressing any of the distribute buttons should do what
they're supposed to. At least it does here anyway.

Hope this helps.
