Click and hold the pencil tool, and select the option on the right (the middle option is the smoooooth tool).

There is an Erase Tool located in the Flyout of the Pencil Tool.

Hmmm... I hope to say nothing stupid but, this tool you mentioned seems only to erase the contour... the fill seems to be still complete. can this eraser tool chop off bits of the whole object, be it contour, fill or both?

Uhmmm, No. You are dealing with a vector object, it HAS to know where to end the fill. It will either fill in a straight line between end points, or you need to MOVE the path in to make the fill follow that.

You can kinda mimic the effect of a raster eraser by using the Liquify Tools, specifically the Warp Tool (The little pushy finger tool below the rotate tool). Double-click it, and in the settings go to 100% intensity, turn off the simplify option.

The closest way to fake up Corel Draw's Eraser in Illustrator is to apply the Pathfinder Substract Effect at the Layer level, then draw with the pencil to erase a filled path.

It's a little bit like a mouse gnawing on a piece of cheese.

Ah, interesting, Kurt. I will try that. Sounds like that will do the trick. You guys are all very helpful (and eager to help!).

Some stuff I did in Draw... I hope someday I can find the right tools to do the same or better in Illu...

Yes, and if you're going to do something like cutting streets, then apply the Outline Stroke Effect to the brush stroke.
