Adobe Illustrator for Windows - Boxes around paths

I have managed to get boxes around my paths. Not bounding boxes in the
Photoshop sense in that they do not seem linked in any way to the paths
they bound. I do not remember what I did to put them there but I have
tried everything to get them to respond to something. They each have
their own layer and seem to behave very much like paths but they must
be something else. I am reluctant to trash them without finding out
more about what they are supposed to be used for. If anyone has an
explanation it would be appreciated.
