Author Problem with overprinting (I think)

I have created a file which uses a black layer over the top of the edges of various other colours and images. It looks fine on screen but when the proof is printed, you can see the other colours underneath. However, the layer was 100% K. I've now changed
that to a richer black using CMY and K, so will this cover the images and other colours to create a nice solid colour? Or is it something to do with overprinting?

So the seps are showing the bottom stuff printing even when it is behind the black?

Have you tried turning overprint fill to off on the black (Attributes pallet)?

Also you can see if this is working by selecting VIEW>OVERPRINT PREVIEW

I have checked the attributes and the Overprint Fill isn't ticked... I haven't looked at separations but the printed proofs show the errors when they come back to me.

Did I define the problem correct?

You have a black image on top of colored items. The black image is not knocking out the colored items beneath it.
Overprint fill (on the black object) is not checked.

Does the top (black) layer have a stroke? If so you'll want overprint stroke off as well.

If you like you can e-mail me the file and I'll take a look at it.

Sounds like you defined it right. The black is just solid colour. I just don't want to be able to see any of the other layers underneath it. I can't send the file as it's massive (it's image heavy). The layer doens't have a stroke...

Is the black at 100% transparency on the transparency pallet?

Does toggling on/off the overprint preview change your view any?

When you print seperations do you get items knocked out?

Can you try to make a new very simple document with just two items (your black top item and a colored bottom item) and see if the new document exhibits the same problem>

Who is providing the proof?

Some rips are configured to overprint 100% black whether or not the overprint attribute has been applied at the native level.

So it most definitely IS an overprinting issue (100% black is a transparent color not opaque), and the printer doing the job is the one responsible for nasty looking overprints.

Recreating the single color black element as a rich black will definitely fix your problem (assuming you are printing 4 colors), and is probably what you should have done from the outset... Large expanses of black (even banner type) should be rich black i
n a 4-color project.

She is using rich black now.

Sophie: What John said. Also where on your file are you seeing your problem?
