Save for Web makes fonts ugly

| I'm trying to create a web banner in Ill CS2. I want the background to be transparent. When I chose save for web though (whether I choose gif for transparencies or sacrifice that and use jpeg) the text becomes jagged and looks unattractive. I've just been
using the text tool (verdana font).
I have tried a myriad of different settings to fix this but it doesn't change a thing, only the file weight.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

| Kitmit,
There's no really good answer to this - text at 72ppi never looks really
crisp. You have more antialiasing options available to you in Photoshop
that Illustrator and those can help.
JPEG compresion can play hell with text appearance - Gif will always
tend to look better. If using transparency, you do need to be careful in
selection of matte colour though.

| kizmit,
Saving for Web, did you tick the Anti-Aliasing which is hidden away in the Image Size box?

| Yea, I tried ant-aliasing but it didn't help much.
Hhhmmmm well back to the drawing board I guess :)

| kizmit,
Sorry to persist, but I believe it is possible to get rather nice fonts in GIFs:
Two questions:
1. Have you set Matte to an appropriate colour, usually the (average) background colour?
2. Are the jagged edges inside the image itself or bordering the transparent part?
