stroke around image

| Please help, I am using Illustrator CS2 _ Windows. When I place an image in my design, I can't make a stroke appear around it like I can when I simply draw a rectangle. I understand how to make the stroke, change its color and weight. It just doesn't show
up around either a jpg or a psd place in an Illustrator graphic. I have two books and have tried the help files - no luck finding my answer.

| Connie:
1. In the appearance palette, options>add new stroke;
2. Effect>Path>Outline Object.
Should be there.

| You realize that your stroke will be a rectangle, and not conform to any artwork in the .jpg/.psd right?

| Philip:
If the raster image supports transparency, then the outline will go around the edges of the visible content of the image. So, no, it won't necessarily be a rectangle.
If it's a jpeg, then all bets are off, it will be a rectangle. You may be able to trick around it, though, by doing stuff with an opacity mask, transparency settings and rasterizing.

| Thanks for the correction Bert, I had never tried that route on a .psd before.
