I have a wierd mouse problem in Illustrator and photoshop running under vista. The problem happens under both Vista RC1 and RC2 and only happens in adobe applications. When I click on a location in the document the mouse cursor will jump up and to the lef
t. If I try to drag an object in the document it tends to jump and will not drag towards the lower right corner. Unfortunately this problem makes all my CS2 suite applications pretty much unusable. I have tried multiple types of mice (optical, ball, wired
, wireless) with the same results for all of them. The touchpad does the same thing as well. I haven't been able to find anything in Adobe or microsoft knowledgebases and was hoping someone here might have an idea on how to resolve this issue. I don't rea
lly want to go back to XP but I may have to.

Thanks

I don't really want to go back to XP but I may have to.

You mean you don't have a working XP SP2 partition you can boot into to get work done while you play with Vista Release Candidates?

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but posts like this absolutely blow my mind. I hope you don't depend on your PC for a living.

As a matter of fact I have vista installed on my play computer not my work computer. I'm not quite that stupid. CS2 is installed on my play computer because I've found that if I install graphics/art applications on my work computer I tend not to get any a
ctual work done and play with the graphics instead :) I have found Vista to be more stable for me than XP. I would like to stick with it if I can get the adobe software working correctly.

...if I install graphics/art applications on my work computer I tend not
to get any actual work done...

I'm sorry, Laura, but I would guess that statement is non-sensical to most participants here, who use graphics applications to do "actual" work.

I wish you the very best with Vista.

Well, I suppose it's nice to have a preview of what bugs I'll have to deal with...if I don't go Mac by then.

I've got a test machine set up with Vista RC1 and I can confirm that
behavior. I've seen it quite a few time with InDesign.

Harron,

.... if I install graphics/art applications on my work computer ...

I am convinced Laura meant to say games.

:o Games?! Never! Outside of World of Warcraft and Oblivion art is far more addicting. :)

Glad to konw I'm not the only one who has experienced this problem. Does Adobe read these forums? I don't want to pay for a tech support call just to inform them they have a bug.

You can report bugs here:

http://www.adobe.com/misc/bugreport.html

But I doubt anything is going to be done to fix an application running
on an unsupported beta operating system.

It could still be an Vista bug. Time will tell.

I believe you are right. I have not even tried those. I reread your message, and understood it. Maybe Harron will, too.

I have the same problem. It only occurs with Adobe applications. What gives?

I believe this is happening because you have chosen a DPI setting other than the default 96 DPI (sort of like large fonts on Windows XP).

When you do this, Vista scales the user interface of applications to make them larger. Unfortunately, a bug in Vista relating to the mouse pointer APIs causes the mouse pointer to jump.

We are attempting to work around this bug in upcoming software, but older software will suffer from this bug.

Suggestion 1: Right-click on the Illustrator CS2 application to bring up the properties dialog. Click on the Compatibility tab. Check the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings". Bug goes away. You will have to do this for every application that is
affected.

Suggestion 2: Set the DPI back to 96. Bug goes away.

Suggestion 3: In the DPI Scaling window, choose "Custom DPI"...then check the "Use Windows XP style DPI scaling" option. This will prevent Illustrator CS2 and other applications from having their UI "scaled" automatically...and the mouse from jumping. Bug
goes away.

It is a shame that these issues occur, but the bug is a Vista issue and will affect any application that uses GetCursorPos()/SetCursorPos() APIs...which would affect most Adobe applications. The "scaling" feature was supposed to work on all legacy applica
tions but apparently it does not. Fortunately, Microsoft thought to put some extra checkboxes in the software to work around these problems.

I should add the following:

It is known that Illustrator CS2 will run acceptibly on Vista, providing that the following compatibility items are checked:

Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI settings

Without these settings, issues can occur ranging from minor cosmetic issues to major usability issues. Not all users will need all of these settings; the details are quite complex.

I also believe that versions of Illustrator prior to CS2 will also work on Vista with these same compatibility settings but I have not tested it myself.
