I hope this isn't a surpassingly stupid question. I'm trying to do something that seems rather simple. I have a shape, I want to add a texture. However, when I add a texture, it exists far outside the boundaries of the shape. For example, if I make a squa
re with a 1px border, and add canvas texture, that texture exists outside of the outline stroke for many pixels in each direction, and apparently in photo negative. Am I missing something obvious?

Try giving your square a fill then applying the texture.

Thanks Philip. Unfortunately I have already tried both ways. I have also tried with and without stroke, with and without drop shadow, etc. Thanks for your reply!

In the Document Raster Effect Settings, change your background color from White to Transparent.
