| Thanks to anyone taking the time to read this post. I've come across an odd error on an important AI file that's keeping me from opening it. The error text (pasted below) is similar to some encountered by other folks on this forum, but isn't quite the sam
e. I can open the file in an older version of AI, and can partially import it into a new document, but in both cases, I lose the many layers that were in the original file. I've tried to locate the offending code in a text editor, and even in WinHex, but
with no luck.
Can anyone offer me some advice? Thanks again!
Here's the error:
Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal operand.
Offending operator: "5706F6F6E"
Context:

| Teri, I believe this is one for you.

| There isn't enough context there for me to tell what is going on.
What version of Illustrator was this file saved by? What version are you opening it in? When you tried to locate the offending text in a text editor, had you done the enableContentRecovery steps to get a decompressed text version of the file?
I would suggest sending the file to Shane Tracy:

| Thanks for pondering this issue.
The file was created and saved by Illustrator CS2, and I'm trying to open it again in the same version. I tested opening it in both CS and ver. 10. I'm not familiar with the enableContentRecovery steps--I'll do a search in the Knowledge Base here to see i
f I can find out how to do that, and I'll post my results here.
I saw and read through that thread posted by Shane, but unfortunately, I don't have the authority to send the file outside the company, due to privacy concerns. It also seemed from the follow-up discussion that Shane wouldn't be returning fixed files, any
way, although I realize I may be wrong in that assumption.
Thanks again, Teri. I'll post back shortly.

| Okay, the enableContentRecovery steps worked to the extent that I was able to create a copy and locate three instances of the offending operator in a text editor. Unfortunately, I don't know what to do with those instances.
Thanks very much for the advice so far. Do you have any further insight?

| Not without the ability to see what the file content says.

| I understand. I've gotten in touch with my supervisor to see if I can send or post the file for you to take a look at. (I hate having to search out approval to do this, but I guess it's the way big companies operate.) Thanks for being willing to help me o
ut.
