Author illustrator printing darker than photoshop

Config: Windows XP, Illy 8, PSE3, HP Laserjet 1320n (b&w 1200 dpi + ProRes).

I have an image that I've manipulated in PhotoShop and like the printed result. Save it, place it in an Illustrator document, and print -- and it's darker when printed from Illy. Satisfying dark grays have turned to eye-catching blacks. An off-white backg
round which had virtually disappeared when printed from PSE3 reappears when printed from AI8. These are not subtle differences. And yet it isn't consistent: there are some areas of light gray which actually look darker in the PSE print. And the Illy print
is clearly still a full gray-scale image -- it hasn't been reduced to 16 grays or anything like that.

When I placed the image in the Illy document, I didn't do anything to it except move it to the correct location -- no scale, no other transformation, etc. I've checked all the printer settings and they are the same, particularly the "Print Quality: ProRes
1200 (180dpi)". Illy has the output resolution setting, but that's not for images. Illy also has "use printer's default screen", which is on -- I tried turning it off, with dramatically poorer quality results.

Currently I'm placing an RGB image, which is mostly b&w. I've also tried removing all color in PSE and saving as gray scale, no difference. I was using a 200dpi image, changed it to 100dpi based on recommendations for a 1200dpi printer, no change. I've tr
ied saving a color profile per the FAQ, but apparently PSE doesn't have this feature. I checked "ICC Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1" when saving in PSE; no change.

The only thing I can think to try that I haven't tried is making a different version of the image for Illy. That would be a serious pain, so I'm still trying to do it right before resorting to such a kludge?

Any ideas for me? Thanks.

Edward
