Surely you should be using File/Move , not Burn.

Hello Colin,

First, thanks for responding -- you have an excellent track record in the User Forum!

Yep, I’m confused. My question indicated I used “File > Backup > Copy/Move” for freeing up space on my internal hard drive (the dialog box is titled Burn/Backup, however).

When I use the “File >Move” command, it seems to work properly (i.e., the file is physically moved to an external hard drive folder, & PSA2 tracks it). However, when I try to Restore those moved files, the program searches for a “Tally (*.tly) file which
doesn’t exist in the new location. Using “Get Files” command, the following error message appears: “Items Not Imported … The file already exists in the catalog”. In other words, if the “File > Move” command is used, how are the files retrieved/restored, i
ncluding the PSA2 file info (keywords, etc.), to the original folder on my internal hard drive?

I agree with your “surprise” re this simple problem. It must be another Senior Moment in my life. ;-(

What are you doing a Restore for? That's only for use when you've made a backup.

If you want to move them back to the internal hard drive, then use File/Move again.

Colin,

Your recommendation sounds logical, but the “Move” option in “File >Move” is grayed out unless one or more files in the Photo Well are “selected”. It sounds illogical, but apparently “Move” is a one-way option for PSA2?

As I explained in the initial question, I currently have some other files backed up on my external hard drive using PSA2. The “File >Restore” command uses the “Backup.Tly” file included with those files.

I am reasonably certain I was able to accomplish the above using the “Copy/Move” command under “File >Backup” since that command’s definition (in the dialog box) indicates it can be used to “free-up hard disk space”.

If the problem is with PSA2, would installing the program again be possible without losing the file info? OR, should I purchase Photoshop Elements and migrate the files to it? (I currently use Photoshop CS2 for image editing, but my impression is that it
doesn’t have the latest Adobe file organizing features).

Thanks for your patience,

Richard Evans

P.S. When using the “File >Move” command, the only alternative I know for retrieving/restoring the files is to delete their PSA2 “Catalog” versions & start over.

I am lost Richard. I just don't understand what your problem is.

If you want to clear space on your internal drive, you can move images to an external drive using File/Move. That's it. Now, when PSA wants to access the image, it will go to the external drive.

What's the problem?

Good question, Colin. While I will answer it, I am stretching your goodwill, for which I apologize. I plan to install PS Elements tomorrow, which should resolve my problem, which is => when I Move files to an external storage, I don’t want to burn any bri
dges behind me, meaning that I want to be able to retrieve them back to my hard drive, or transfer them to a larger external HD, to DVDs, etc., *with all file tags & info attached*. Also, I can’t haul the external HD around when traveling and when showing
important photos to gallery curators.

I’ll post the results of how PS Elements handles this situation.

Thanks again!

Richard Evans
