The problem, is that it is the mask that goes out of the range of the image. :-(

duplicate the layer with your mask on it (original layer with "not enough real estate" problem).
on the duplicate layer, delete the mask, and scale/position the image to the size/position it needs to be.
select the newly scaled layer, precompose (moving all attributes).
copy the maskshape from your original layer, paste it on your newly precomped layer in your timeline.
I think andrew's method should have worked for you as well, though.
maybe we're not understanding the exact nature of the problem?
