Why more complex? As an AE plugin, Trapcode's Particular is more integrated into the AE world than Particle Illusion. It would be my choice.

Particular is a 3d particle sim. Particle Illusion is 2d.

Holy @#$%! Check out the "Polar 2007" clip in the Trapcode gallery <http://www.trapcode.com/gallery.html> to see Particular used to incredible effect.

Of course, this says as much about the motion designer as the plugin, but still.
