Author Using write on effect... rendering for use in Premiere Pro

In After Effects I have a simple text message in a 30 second comp. "Merry Christmas", appears, using the write on effect (takes 3 seconds), and then remains on the screen for another 20 seconds.

I can get this into Premiere, using the render que, setting Animation Giff, alpha+RGB, hard egded transparency, and I am choosing "length of comp".

The problem I get is timing. In Premiere, instead of taking 3 seconds to write on, and then holding for the next 20......it takes the full comp length just to write on! (30 seconds).

So, if I chop the composition in AE to just 3 seconds, then in Premiere I get the 3 second write on effect, but then it dissappears, and there's no way to get the text to stay on screen for the next 20 seconds.

How can I fix this weird timing problem?
Why isn't Premiere recognizing the timing correctly?

Thanks.
