CCRipplePulse - beginner question.

| I have a comp with a blue, solid, layer. I applied the CCRipplePulse
effect to get a simple "stone in a pond" effect. I added a grid to
the solid so I could see a bit more of what's happening. I've animated
the Pulse Level and when I preview the comp you can see the grid
distort from the ripples. However . . . . the ripples don't seem to
have any height (I've adjusted the Amplitude parameter in CCRipplePulse to
many different values). The layer is 3D and when I turn it edge-on you
see nothing, hence my conclusion of zero-height ripples.
Thanks in advance for any help.

| After Effects layers are 2D - they have no true depth. Plugins like Ripple Pulse simulate depth with shading, but there is no actual depth to what it does. AE is often referred to as "Postcards In Space" because it works entirely with 2 dimensional planes
within a 3D environment.
A third party plugin called Forge Freeform allows you to create genuine 3D distortions within AE, but even then they occur within a 2D layer in a comp.
Creating realistic 3D simulations in AE requires careful manipulation of 2D planes and effects to trick the viewer.

| Ok, I understand. For my purposes the shading will be acceptable. But that isn't happening either. How do I get the shading to work?

| I put up a sample project a long time ago at Creative Cow. You'll find the thread here <http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-b...iew=t&archive=T> and the project file can be downloaded by right cl
icking this link <http://home.surewest.net/rgerard/ae...ts/ripples2.aep> and doing a save as to pull in the project file. For some reason on my from Safari .txt gets added to the project name. Just remove that so you get ripples2.aep and you should be
on your way. The photo used in the project can be pulled in from the cow thread.

| To make things easier I've zipped up the project files, the sample movie, and the footage. I've also updated the project file to AE7 and substituted CCRipplePulse for radio waves. This should get you started. There are about a zillion ways to do this with
the plug-ins that ship with AE, and about another zillion with 3rd party solutions.
You'll find the zip file here <http//www.hottek.net/samples/ripples.zip>.

| Thanks Rick! That was *exactly* what I needed!

| Hey Rick... how do you link files on the board?

| It's just basic HTML. There's a link to some basic info right at the top of the message box that contains links to more stuff. You can also check out the quick-edit help link.
To link to a file it has to be put on a server somewhere then you use the following code:
(< )a href="http://www.yoursite.com/yourDirectory/file.name" target=blank>
The brackets ( ) around the > need to be removed. I put them in to break the code. the target=blank forces the link to open in a new window and is useful for referencing other pages. I don't include that line of code when referencing project files. About
the only thing that this forum won't embed is a QT movie.
That's about it.
