Does anyone know why when I render something using the HDV 1080i codec the resulting movie file causes Final Cut to stutter extremely badly? When I render the exact same clip using the exact same codec in 'Motion' it works just fine in Final Cut. What giv
es?

Since HDV is MPEG-2 based, the frame-by-frame way AE renders might be a source of problems. I have no idea how Quicktime could build P and B frames when they haven't been rendered yet!

I never try to do any MPEG-based compression out of AE. (I learned the hard way trying to do h.264 out of AE).

I recommend rendering out to a uncompressed intermediary (like Apple's Uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit or Animation)

Since I have absolutely no idea what your settings are in AE or FCP, I am guessing that you are experiencing the 1440 / 1920 auto scaling issue.

Try this - from the beginning:

Final Cut Pro:

All Sequence Settings:
Frame Size: 1440x1080 (HD 1440x1080 / 16:9)
PAR: HD (1440x1080)
Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
Frame Rate: 29.97
Compressor: HDV 1080i60 / 100%
Audio: 48k / 16-Bit
Unlimited RT / Scrub High Quality / Playback Quality: High / Playback Frame Rate: Full / Record To Tape: Full Quality

After Effects:

My Comp Settings:
1920x1080 preset (HDTV 1920x1080/29.97/Square Pixels)

Ftg Interpolation:
HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33)
Separate Fields: Upper Field First

Render Queue:
Render Settings:
Best / Full / 1920x1080 (Comp Size)
Upper Field First
Frame Rate: 29.97

Output Module:
Quicktime Movie / HDV 1080i60 (codec) / Audio 48k-16Bit-Stereo
Final Size: 1920x1080

I recommend digitizing HDV (Long GOP) as DVCProHD (frames) and working with it in that codec. Your processors will thank you.

Thanks for the replies. Joey, The footage comes in from XDCam using FAM directly from the XDCAM disc. It comes in as HDV. I'v eused all those settings to no avail. The part that is really befuddling is that if I use Apples 'Motion' it has no problem. I th
ink Navarro is on to something regarding how AE renders frames.

I don't know, my friend...I am having no problems with HDV at all. There is something within your settings.

Good luck :D
