If you go rent a copy of the 50's great "Forbidden Planet" you'll see this done pretty well. It looked to me that they built a set where something foot-shaped under the sandwas made to drop down, revealing the print, but maybe not what you want. This was
a monster anyway, not a person.
I would tinik the easiest way for you to do this would be to shoot a lock down shot of the sand plain, have someone walk through it, and then roto the resulting prints in one at a time. Sould look pretty cool if you play around with opacity, edge feather
transfer modes etc. and you'll need to lock that camera off real solid.
Just another thought, if you did this with hi res stills, as you reveal your footprints you could put a move on the whole thing and follow them along a ways.
