Author MPEG2 portrait

We are creating a Flash movie to be converted to video and played from a PAL
DVD.

The client would like this to be played on a screen, turned 90 degrees so
that it is portrait.

We have created it at 576 x 768 (because Flash is a square pixel app).

My question is this - can anyone spot any encoding problems with these
'inverted' dimensions, or, indeed, any other potential problems? Will MPEG2
support this shape?

If not, is there any alternative solution?

Cheers :O)

Export your show from Flash, then rotate and scale in After Effects within a 720x576 DV comp.

If you want fields rather than frames in your final product, you'll need to render out of Flash at 50fps, then render fields in AE. Don't introduce fields in any way until the rotation has been done.

This all presumes you are using a 4:3 monitor, which seems like a lot of trouble to me just to create a 3:4 image - not sure why you'd bother. If the client is using a 16:9 screen like a plasma, then obviously you need to do your Flash job at 576x1024 sq.
pix, then go through the same steps listed above.

Thanks Andrew - when you suggest rendering it out at 50fps do you mean
literally just pushing up the frame rate so that it's twice
the speed (i.e plays in half the time) or do you mean re-edit the Flash
movie so that it runs at the same speed, just 50 fps (so essentially I have
to make the whole thing half the speed in order to play correctly at
50fps) - cheers :O)

Btw, the screen is a plasma at 4:3 and I see your point about the rotation
(but this is all at the behest of the client - I have no say/control over
their demands - as usual ;O)

I mean the latter - same duration, but 50 frames per second. This means AE will transform each Flash frame into a PAL field. But it's not actually crucial - the product will look fine at 25fps no fields, maybe even more aesthetically pleasing to some beca
use it's more "filmy".

I didn't even know you could get 4:3 plasmas!

Well there is little fast motion going on so we may be able to get away with
25 frames only.

As far as the 4:3 plasma, I am only going on the specs provided - this job
has been a real tight one so I haven't had a chance to even question the
actual existence of a 4:3 plasma!

Ouch - make a call about the plasma ASAP - get a model number and check it's specs online. It'll be disastrous if you have to rebuild the whole show at a different size at the last minute!

Called them and you're right, it's 16:9 - this isn't a problem though as we
can simply make the Flash movie taller (1024) and centre the design - a
happy mistake actually, because the plasma will be embedded in a giant 3D
mobile phone and the top and bottom of the screen will be slightly cut off
by the plastic phone casing anyway so actually this works out better....for
a change.

Thanks for your help :O)

I think you can convert flash to DVD mpeg2 with magic swf2avi.

Magic Swf2avi is the only tool that supports conversion with movie
clips and clear audio.

And it can convert swf flash to AVI, DVD mpeg video directly.
