Author Inability to import any files.

What I have:
Brand new installation of After Affects 6.5 Professional, with 6.5.1 update.
Running on Dual 2.5 GHZ PowerMac G5, 1 gig of ram.

What I can't do:
Open any files. Or do much for that matter except bring up tool windows. Everything in the "file menu" and all of the other menus is greyed out.

Here's a screen cap

So, am I missing something obvious here? I'm hoping so. I open the program I want to go to to "file" and "import" but I can't get that far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

looks like you might have the tip of the day open (off screen). Try hitting enter.

If that doesn't work, my first inclination after reading your subject was to trash your prefs. Not sure how to do it on the mac - maybe someone else can chime in.

Thank you for your input.
I tried hitting enter, I'm still having the problem.
I've got a dual display setup, so any additional windows I think I'd see.

I just purged my cache by going to "edit", "purge" then "all"
Still having the problem...

Following up with some more screen caps of my drop down menus.
Note, almost everything is greyed out. The only exception being the Window Menu.

Edit Menu: <http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...xn/EditMenu.jpg>

Composition Menu:

Layer Menu:

Window Menu:

I desperately would like to get up and running with this. Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's it show under View? I think the menus are greyed cause you don't have a project window open. Out of curiosity, what happens if you apple n (new project). Think that's the shortcut on the mac..... Or maybe it's option apple n.

Sadly, the view menu is also greyed out

Apple N doesn't open anything either. I can't even go to "file", then "new" It just won't let me.

I'm baffled. :-(

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

No chance you have a non-visable display device active, like a Decklink or Kona card or something? Does your System Prefs/Display screen definitely only show the screens which you can see? Does the Tip Of The Day screen show up when you start AE? If it do
esn't, I suspect that it is appearing somewhere you can't see it. I know this has been vaguely mentioned earler in the thread, but it's the only obvious cause I can think of.

Uninstall/Reinstall AE?

Where's the prefs on the mac? try deleting those first before uninstalling...

Thank you for your reply.

I do have an analog/digital conveter connected via firewire. It was not powered on when I took those screen caps.
I do have a dual display set up, with a Apple Studio Display and a Viewsonic Flat CRT. When checking the display preferences I only see two panes, the ones that represent the studio display and viewsonic respectively.

I've never seen a "Tip of the Day" come up.
I'll try removing the second monitor and the analog/digital converter.
Wish me luck!

Also, I've re-installed AE once already. So simply removing it and re-installing did not solve the issue.

Out of curiosity, did you try hitting watch folder or run script? Noticed those qeren't greyed out and wondered if they worked.. :P

do you have multiple copies of plugins? That also brings up a box on startup...

I did try watch folder and pointed it to my "Movies" folder. It created a reference Html file in that folder. That's about it though.

I only have what is installed in a complete install out of the box. So I haven't added any additional plugins. Where would I go to see/manage my current plugins?

not sure where on the mac.. It should be under \ae6.5\support files\plugins

Problem Solved!! Somehow I managed to only install the render engine. Another re-install, and problem solved!

Thank you everyone for your input.
