Author Question about news servers

Right now, I am using outlook express and getting newsgroups from my ISP. I
do not mind using outlook express however; I do not have a wide selection of
group. I was thinking of getting codecomments.com. However, I am not sure how
it works.

Do you get access to more newsgroups?

Do they provide you with new software to read the groups?

Can I still use outlook express with newsreader?

They say that if you get the "unlimited download" option, you can download
as much as you want from there "unlimited server".

So is this unlimited server just as good as any other server?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Outlook Express does not determine what newsgroups you can see. That is
determined by your ISP. If your ISP does not provide enough groups, the only
option I know of is to switch ISPs, which I have done on several occasions.

You can use OLX with any newsgroup server I know of.

There are news reader programs better suited to Usenet than Outlook.
A lot of them are free - like Free Agent (for text messages)

The news server determines how many groups you get and Newsfeeds
probably gets most of them.

I think giganews (a news server) has their own reader. It isn't free
and you aren't required to use it if you use their service (and it
doesn't work very well if I believe the posts).

Outlook express is a mail program that also reads Usenet posts. Yes;
you could continue to use it with a different server. You have to
tell it the name of the server and if a password is required, you'd
enter that info as well. (all readers have to be told what the name
of the news server is - if you use your ISP's "free" server, it's name
will usually be: news.yourisp.net) If your ISP supplied you with
"start up" software - that was already part of the package and you
didn't have to manually enter the names, passwords, and setup
parameters.

For text messages, you hardly need unlimited server privileges (and
pay for unlimited). If you download binaries (music, pictures,
movies, software) you do need some greater capacity (particularly if
you also have the bandwidth to handle it (cable, DSL))

Unlimited just refers to how much or how fast you can download. If
you ain't got the capacity or need there's no point in getting it.
You still get access to the same newsgroups - you pay based on how
much or how fast. Some services sell "blocks" of data - you pay for
how many gigabytes you download - over any length of time.

Many, if not most, ISP's do supply a news server as part of their
subscriber's package. You can't beat the price - free. You can also
opt for a private/premium news server that you pay on a monthly basis.
With the appropriate news reader program, you can use both at the same
time.

For instance, I get codecomments.com for free with my ISP. due to
problems with their software (the ISP's - not newsfeeds) the service
is less than stellar. I have a subscription to Octanews that fills in
the blanks.

For a Binary reader (music, etc.) I use BNR3 (Binary News Reaper).
It has the capability to work with any number of news servers, and can
assemble a file across the servers and across groups as well. For
instance - I want to download an mp3 someone has posted, but due to
the nature of Usenet, a couple of parts (the whole mp3 is sent as a
collection of files) are missing. BNR3 can assemble the whole thing
from different servers and, if the mp3 was cross posted, from
different groups. Much better chance of getting a complete file -
more important with large media posts. A lot easier than keeping
track of what parts are where, downloading them to a folder, then
manually reassembling into a whole mp3 (the way I used to do it). It
would be a nightmare with Outlook.

For reading text messages, like this one, I use "Forte Agent." (I
could use Outlook, but Agent works better for me - and I hate Outlook)

Most of the "free" news servers aren't that good.

Google around for Usenet faq's and read a few opinions on news reading
programs. There's a lot to learn.
