| I have been on every discussion group, every tech site
(including MS)and have tried ump-teen "sure fire" ways to
open a .mix file without purchasing new software. It
seems - once again - Microsoft has created a file that is
not compatible with other Microsoft software! I have
jumped through all the hoops, downloaded "tried-and-true"
shareware, tried to copy, import, export - every
suggestion I could find and nothing will let me open this
file. My only success has been a partial image - one of
the picture in the file - but there are three and I need
all of them. I have downloaded the latest converters from
MS, tried "Pollyware" - everything! and nothing works.
This is such a waste of valuable time and shame on you,
Microsoft for making such an incompatible file type in
this day and age. I will appreciate any information or
help - I'm on XP operating and Office 2002. I can see the
thumbnail in Explorer even! So why can't MS open??

I know that Microsoft Picture It! products, including Digital Image Pro and
of course PhotoDraw can open Mix files.

in the newsgroups
you posted:
|| Brian,

|| Picture It 7.0 can't open any of my .MIX files, all of which were
|| created in PhotoDraw 2.
There are some known issues with certain versions:

| Hi Brian,
Seems like there are many known issues with many versions of PictureIt. Mine
is PictureIt Photo 7.0.
I agree with the poster: it was truly sucky of Microsoft to abandon the .MIX
format *AND* leave people with no way to open their .MIX files because
Microsoft would not allow others to write code that could open them. (The
author of IrfanView told me the latter.)

That is true. But as you know, PhotoDraw can open them :-) I assume if they
created them with PhotoDraw, they still have PhotoDraw? I have thousands of
mix files on my Windows XP SP2 system with Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000v2 and
everything works as advertised since day 1.

| Hi Brian,
Yep--IF you have PhotoDraw. I have three versions of it plus backup copies,
so I'm not complaining. But how 'bout all those folks who were not so
fortunate. IMO it was a poor decision, with virtually no regard for users.
Office 2000: PhotoDraw. Office after that: no PhotoDraw. They left a lot of
folks hanging.
It wasn't until Windows XP/2000 that MSFT finally said, "Look, we're not
going to support 16-bit stuff any more." Couldn't they have shown a modicum
of similar consideration for the PhotoDraw folks? Or couldn't they have
released the file specs so IrfanView etc. could open them? Of course they
could. The second option would have cost them nothing (IMO) and would have
made them a lot of friends.

| I've been viewing mix files for years with Thumbs Plus. Do a search on
googlegroups you should find my hack posted a few times.
Geez I hope it's here somewhere I can't remember it anymore myself :(
