Author MS PhotoDraw Ver 2 replacement?
Bob Day

I see that PhotoDraw has been discontinued. Does MS have a different
product to fill the same role? Has its features been rolled into another
product, like Publisher 2003?

Please advise.

Many of the features have been rolled into Digital Image Pro 9, FrontPage
and Powerpoint.

The reply from Brian Kvalheim may be so, however none of=20
the Office 2003 programme or XP seem to supprt *.mix files=20
which has left users with files they cannot open.

Any suggestions on how to access these files would be=20
welcomed.

If you have PhotoDraw 2, which presumably you do because you have MIX files,
it has not stopped working. You can use it with Office XP or Office 2003. (I
use it with Office XP and Windows 2000.) You may face challenges getting PD2
to run under Windows XP, but it can be done.

Cruelly, Microsoft will not release the MIX file format. No current
Microsoft program supports the MIX format. IMO, PhotoDraw purchasers have
been abandoned by Microsoft.

Some older versions of PictureIt support MIX to some extent. PictureIt Lite,
which is good for nothing else, and which comes with Microsoft Works Suite
2000, can open MIX files, but I don't remember whether it can open all
versions of them.

Your best bet is probably a copy of PhotoDraw 2000 Version 2 on eBay, about
$110 to $130.

Cautions:

o Get the three CD version 2 standalone set (originally $109) if you want
all the clipart and content goodies.
o Get the two CD SR1 version if you just want SR1 (which you don't need). If
you have O2K Premium, you may be able to order a set of replacement SR1 CDs
from Microsoft. CDs 3 and 3 are PhotoDraw 2 SR1.
o Avoid the original Version 1 CDs; that program is useless. It cannot even
open Version 2 MIX files.

"You may face challenges getting PD2 to run under Windows XP"

Not yet. Just installed it a few days ago on Windows XP Professional. Even
ran 2 sessions at the same time for a little while. No hiccups. :-)
